Christmas in July

Okay; here goes.

We’ve been looking for a new crate, since Juliette had been sleeping in the one that Jolie grew out of…and Juliette’s now bigger than Jolie. So that wasn’t working. We were thinking that one they could both fit in might be nice, since being together seems to make them both more relaxed, and relaxation is hard to come by with two neurotic hunting dogs and, you know, me in the house.

Shopping is problematic, though, what with our lack of car, two neurotic hunting dogs, and the sheer unfashionableness of crate training in Paris (Jolie’s first crate was meant for a cat; the next one was a super-expensive travel model). And then we found this Germany-based website that sells all kinds of dog stuff, including giant bags of their food and about thirty different types of crate.

Jackpot!

We celebrated by opening a bottle of wine, and then Nick got down to the ordering. So, two things:

1) German dog toys are awesome. They have these little pastel super-squeaking egg things that a chick pops out of…there are no words. The squeaking just hasn’t stopped since that box got here (and a special thank-you to Andrea for helping me practice my written French, since getting it here required some customer-service wrangling). But I’m curious: why is “anatomically shaped” a selling point for a dog toy? And just what the hell kind of anatomical shape is this one supposed to BE in?

2) I will never again trust Nick when I don’t see the measuring tape anywhere, but he still swears that he “measured”:

Why yes, that IS my six-foot-tall husband hanging out in the dog crate.

I mean…it’s so big that even thinking about shipping it back exhausted me. I was going to try to pawn it off on a couple I know with a Great Dane, but Juliette needed a crate now, and it’s really well-designed. So we stowed it discreetly in the bedroom and stuck the old crates into the new one, and fortunately they love it.

Of course, they still like our bed the best:
